Etapas — These faces started with a pencil sketch, then they went on to Adobe Illustrator for refinement, and then got die-cut onto cardstock. Those scattered little cut-out pieces then went out to the yard, where I loosely spray-painted all over them. Sometimes the colors changed the order of the layers, sometimes the faces were re-assembled in different rotations as the wind would sometimes flip a piece. I enjoy a process that takes a few steps, that forces many decisions along the way, that provides surprises. The layered steps each allowed for experimentation and enabled an expressive dialogue between analog techniques and digital tools.
