Layers — During art school, I went through a lot of painting—some good, some bad, most ok. I saved a lot of canvases upon graduation, not so much as mementos but as raw material with the intent of painting over them someday; to use those stunted experiments as a base layer for something better down the line.
Then, in 2009, we had a flood in our basement, and I lost them all. As we were being forced to take everything to the dumpster, I snapped some photos of those studies. Though no longer existent, those early paintings are still the base layers of these explorations, most taking that foundation for further experimentation through digital means. The fact that they were lost to water, through pipes, in a basement, also influenced the final outcome.
